Investment into Lombok
The Mandalika Circuit has the honour of hosting an annual race for both the MotoGP and the World Superbike championships. The world-class Mandalika Circuit is part of the Indonesian government’s $3 Billion Mandalika Project: A sustainable development for Lombok including a notable emphasis on sustainable energy and the latest in green technology. The Indonesian government has targeted Lombok in its plans to develop tourism in new areas of Indonesia. As a consequence the island of Lombok and the Kuta area in particular has seen huge investment and dramatic changes recently. The focus is clearly on utilising the best in sustainable energy and the latest in green technology. The project has resulted in the creation of numerous new hotels, facilities and attractions spread out over 1,250 hectares in the Kuta area of the island.
The Indonesian state-owned firm Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) working on tourism development in the Kuta special economic zone (KEK) in Lombok is revamping all key infrastructure in the region, including improved access roads, water treatment facilities, solar power, a 51% dedicated ‘green space’ and an electric train network will be set up to provide an eco-friendly mode of transportation.
These developments have paved the way for some of the biggest investments ever seen in Lombok’s tourism sector. The ambitious sustainable development project from the ITDC also sets out their plan to involve and empower the local people of Lombok, creating around 5,000 new jobs and offering various empowerment programs, especially for those who lived in the Kuta area, including providing English language courses and hospitality training.
With its cutting-edge construction and superior facilities, along with the natural beauty and cultural authenticity of its surroundings, the Kuta area has the potential to become a truly world-class tourism destination.
